This is a little wooden house in Yanaka, one of Tokyo's most fascinating areas, a maze of little streets most too narrow for cars, and one hundred temples. Yanaka was not bombed in the war so has the true taste of old Tokyo. The area is wonderful for walking around and there are many places to eat or buy ready-made food to eat at home.
Very convenient for sight-seeing. On a direct line from Narita airport so easy to stay in when you arrive or leave. Also close to subway lines.
We recommend you try out the public bath nearby - one of Tokyo's few remaining public baths.
The house is a very typical old style house that would normally be lived in by a family. The house is at least sixty years old and the room is very traditional with paper doors and straw mats. You will be on normal Japanese style bedding. The house is an old wooden house - it's not new or luxurious, it is old and quaint, and does have some of the problems of old houses: creaky floors, lack of soundproofing between rooms, audible neighbours... and you can hear the kids singing every morning in the kindergarten nearby! We have heaters in every room that work fine. Our house is a real, typical Japanese environment. Please do not come if you are incapable of living in a non-Western environment or using Japanese style bedding or a typical Japanese bathroom, or if you are only comfortable in shiny new high-rises! If you love other cultures and adapt easily to new experiences you are likely to like our house and the real Japanese experience you will have here.
Your host is an anthropologist and specialist in Japanese traditional culture. Usually free for a chat after 8 or 9 pm or so (especially if you take us out for a drink)!
The house has 3 bedrooms and 2 more in the house two doors down. Free internet and wifi. Very small shared kitchen, Japanese-style bathroom. Washing machine and veranda to hang clothes, coin dryer one minute away. Shared Japanese-style living/working space to relax and eat in (also shared by our kitty!).
We like hiking and skiing on weekends and you are welcome to join us.
Warning: one of us practices Japanese traditional music daily!
