The farmhouse is in the heart of the Chiana Valley, the valley which takes its name from the River Chiana, an ancient Clanis. Despite the cliché of unhealthy and marshy area in fact the valley is fertile and populated since Etruscan times, as evidenced by the presence of big lucumonies (Arezzo, Cortona, Chiusi) and the urban settlements along the hillside often fortified (Lucignano, Foiano, Cortona, Monte San Savino). The precious Etruscan remains are still visible in the local museums (Cortona, Foiano, Chiusi) and major national and international museums. Even in Roman times the area is crossed by Cassia and then by Romea and Loreto, a vital road junction between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coast and the north and south of the Peninsula. The Renaissance was an important era for the area that is enriched by beautiful buildings and art that can still be seen in all the surrounding towns, from the Della Robbia, Signorelli, Vasari. The area is famous for Chianina, an Italian breed of cattle, formerly principally a draught breed, now raised mainly for beef. It is the largest and one of the oldest cattle breeds in the world.
