It was first mentioned in 1296, when Margherita Aldobrandeschi, countess of Savona, ordered the construction of a tower named Torre di Terra, the oldest core of the town. Coming from the main road before reaching the village there are two forts that were part of the defensive system of the promontory, the sixteenth-century Forte Filippo, the contemporary and the eighteenth-century Torre del Mulinaccio Forte Santa Caterina.
