Myrtia village is part of the E4 European path and gives the visitor a great opportunity to view and discover Crete from a different point of view.
The E4 European Path of Crete is a major European route under the supervision of the European Union’s Mountain Walking (EWV): the Greek section was designed and marked out by the Greek Mountaineering and Climbing Federation.
Myrtia is situated in a marvelous rural landscape on the top of a hill. with vineyards covering the sides of the valley all the way to the village. In the wineries of Crete, the tradition of production is still handed down from generation to generation. The traditional Cretan varieties of grapes and wines survived: now they are enjoying a revival, while being enriched with other domestic and international varieties. Modern technology and tradition have been successfully married; contemporary wineries have pulled together to achieve a position of worth for the Cretan wines on both the domestic and international scenes.
Cretan wine-making establishments – with their long winemaking traditions – are open to the public. You can tour the vineyards and cellars, whilst in the more modern set-ups you can taste Cretan wines accompanied with appetizers from the famous Cretan cuisine.
Knossos, the largest and most brilliant centre of the Minoan civilization, is located 7 kilometres north of the village. East of the hill where the magnificent ruins of Minoan Knossos are situated, excavations have also brought to light traces of a Neolithic settlement which dates back to 6000 BC.
"Nikos Kazantzakis" International Airport is 15 kilometres away and the closest beaches are approximately 11 kilometres away.
